Paul Martel's Book

In his new book “To The Least Of
These My Brothers”, Board President Paul R. Martel,
shares eight poignant essays of his travels supporting
surgical teams in South America. The book captures the
unique and intensely human experience of providing
surgical care to third-world children. All profits from
the book support the work of Healing the Children, NE
around the world.
Excerpt from the essay “The Spirit
Finds a Way”:
Thanks to the hard work and
vision of one of our leading surgeons, Healing the
Children has completed 11 medical trips to Neiva,
Colombia and has completed nearly 2000 surgeries there.
Many of those children are the children of rebels...We
said no to the sweating young resident and God help us,
we walked away from him. We walked out into the night to
our cab, out into the dirty street with the mangy,
roaming dogs, through the old broken gate, past the
useless guard and the many tired poor people still
gathered around the hospital. The surgeon took the front
seat of the beat-up cab and I slumped into the back with
Maria, a former nun and worldly scrub nurse with wide
humanitarian experience. In the quiet of the cab as we
waited for the driver, Maria began to cry. We sat
together in the darkness of the Colombian night while
Maria sobbed. She cried for the people of the barrio.
She cried over the massive poverty, the desperation,
suffering, hopelessness and illness. And she cried for
the bleeding boy perhaps dying inside who had been
turned away from three hospitals because he had no
money.
